Ecoli in poultry and how to prevent

“Eish fam… E. coli is no joke in poultry. One small mistake and your whole brooder can wipe out. Where are you farming from?”

As a young farmer from SA, I’ve learnt the hard way that E. coli doesn’t announce itself — it just walks in through dirt, dirty drinkers, wet bedding, contaminated feed, rats, or even eggs that weren’t cleaned properly before incubation. Once it enters your coop, it spreads fast like gossip at a taxi rank.

How do infected chicks behave?
They start looking weak and fluffed-up, lose appetite, breathe funny, get pasty vents, or show sudden deaths with no warning. Sometimes you’ll see swollen navels in younger chicks — that’s another red flag.

Can it be prevented? Absolutely.
Keep litter dry, sanitize drinkers daily, treat borehole water, disinfect brooders before every batch, reduce overcrowding, and keep wild birds and rodents far away from your setup. Clean hands, clean boots, clean tools — consistency is everything. Prevention is cheaper than losing a full batch.

If you’ve ever lost chicks to E. coli, you know the pain. So let’s farm smarter together.
